Running is one of the best ways to lose weight and get in shape. It is a way for you to connect with nature, to spend time by yourself and focus on your fitness and health without having to worry about others.

In this new digital age, there are many apps that are made just for the runner. They run from free to use apps that can help you track routes to paid apps that can keep up with your heart rate and measure your stride.

So which running app is the best?  The one that works for you!  Here are a few of our favorites.

Couch to 5k
One of the most popular running apps on the market, Couch to 5k promises that in 9 weeks’ time it can take you from not having ever ran to being able to run a 5k race. The app helps you track your time, with 30 minutes of running time being devoted 3 times a week for the duration of the 9 weeks. The app is available on both iTunes and the Android market for $1.99.

Ghost Race
Want to compete but don’t feel like running a race? With the Ghost Race app, you can run a race against yourself. All you need to do is choose your desired distance and pace and start running. The app gives you audio cues to let you know how you are doing, and how close you are to reaching your goal. This app is not available on the Android market, though it is available for $0.99 on the iTunes app store.

iSmoothRuniSmoothRun
Are you looking for an all-inclusive running app? Then you need to check out iSmoothRun. This app offers everything from GPS to track your run to cadence control to keep trait of your gait and pace. The app can also track your heart rate and account for things like red lights and switching to a treadmill indoors to make sure you have exact results about your run. This app is not available on the Android market. It is available on iTunes for $4.99.

Nike+ Running
When it comes to free apps, there is no app out there for runners that offers more than the Nike+ app. With this app, you can connect your routes to your Facebook and get cheers in your headphones when you get comments from your friends. You can also create playlists and make use of Nike’s PowerSong to help you stay motivated. This app is available for free on both the Android Marketplace and the iTunes store.

No matter if you are an Android or an iPhone user, there is a running app that can help you to take your route to the next level. With the inclusion of things like GPS and heart rate tracking, you can make all of the changes you need.
