How the Medifast Program Works

Take these 5 steps toward a healthier you

You don’t have to count calories, carbs, or learn a complicated point system. One of the secrets to the success realized by so many people on Medifast is that the program is simple to learn and simple to follow. Here’s how it works:

Step 1:  Pick a Plan

Medifast has developed a number of specially formulated plans to help you lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  • The Medifast 5 & 1 Plan is the basic plan for weight loss and is the most commonly followed plan.
  • Medifast has special plans for diabetics, seniors, teens, nursing mothers, people with gout, and people undergoing bariatric surgery.
  • Medifast offers numerous vegetarian meal options.
  • Detailed plan information and support is available for individuals on anticoagulant medication.
  • A plan is also available for people who have made a health choice to avoid soy.

All Medifast meals are low in fat and include foods that have a low-glycemic index which make Medifast a preferred program for people with type 2 diabetes. A number of Medifast foods are also certified gluten-free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization.

Step 2: Choose a Support System that Works for You

You’re definitely not in this alone. Medifast knows that you’ll have questions along the way and will need encouragement from time to time.  To help you achieve your weight loss goals and make positive, lasting changes to your health, choose the support system that will work best for you:

  • Purchase Medifast online or through the Medifast Contact Center and get information and encouragement from MyMedifast—an active online support community.
  • Work directly with your physician who knows about you and your health needs.
  • Visit a Medifast Weight Control Center for personalized counseling and meal planning.
  • Choose Take Shape For Life and get access to a knowledgeable Health Coach who will guide you through the program at no extra cost.

Step 3: Select and Order Your Meals

You can order Medifast products online or by calling (800) 209-0878. All Medifast orders are shipped directly to your door. To begin, just select your plan package (2-week or 4-week), customize your menu options and note your dietary preferences, make your menu selections from among over 70 different foods and flavors. You can choose specially priced packages or pick your own favorites. Then, place your order and choose your shipping preferences and you’re all set!

Step 4:  Eat Healthy and Track Your Progress Every Step of the Way

On Medifast, you’re required to eat six times a day. That’s once every two to three hours!  Not only does this keep you feeling full and satisfied, it puts your body in a mild fat-burning state so you lose weight quickly and safely.

Medifast is an ideal plan for your busy lifestyle. Each day, you’ll choose five Medifast Meals and one Lean & Green Meal. Medifast Meals are portable and can be eaten right out of the package or easily mixed with water. Your Lean & Green Meal should consist of lean protein and non-starchy vegetables. You can make the Lean & Green Meal yourself or order it in a restaurant.

Don’t forget to chart your progress using the daily logs on MyMedifast.com—an online tracking tool and weight loss support system where you can learn about diet and nutrition and meet others on the  Medifast journey to better health.

Step 5:  Transition to a Long-Term Maintenance Plan

Your investment in a new you pays both short-term and long-term dividends. While you’ll enjoy seeing results very quickly, Medifast also helps ensure that you keep the weight off.

Once you’ve reached your weight loss goal on the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan, you’ll begin the Medifast Maintenance Plan designed to reintroduce healthy foods into your daily routine while increasing your calorie intake to meet your body’s individual calorie requirement for long-term weight maintenance. The Maintenance Plan uses clinically proven principles of nutrition and portion control to retrain your brain and body for a lifetime of healthy, portion controlled eating.
