What kinds of food can I eat on the Medifast program?
You’ll choose from a wide variety of doctor-formulated, vitamin-fortified Medifast Meals. On the proven 5 & 1 Plan, you will eat five of these and one Lean & Green Meal every day. The Lean & Green Meal includes five to seven ounces of lean meat like fish or chicken and three servings of non-starchy vegetables or salad. Medifast offers convenient protein and vegetable lists to help you make good choices and gives you guidance on portion sizes.
Are there certain foods I should not eat while on Medifast?
It is recommended that you do not supplement your diet with anything other than your five Medifast Meals and one Lean & Green Meal each day. Medifast Meals are nutritionally balanced and carefully planned to help you achieve your weight loss goals. Adding other foods to the diet can upset this delicate balance and will undermine your weight-loss goals.
Can I use condiments like sauces and spices?
Yes—but be mindful of how much sugar they contain—it’s probably more than you think! The condiments you choose should contain no more than 1 gram of carbohydrate per serving. You can have up to 3 condiments a day on the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan.
What is the Lean & Green Meal?
This is the one meal you prepare for yourself each day. It is eaten in addition to the five Medifast Meals. The lean portion of the Lean & Green Meal consists of 5-7 ounces of lean meat; the green portion of consists of 3 servings of low carbohydrate vegetables.
Do I have to cook a Lean & Green Meal each day?
Yes. Unless otherwise recommended by your physician, the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan (5 Medifast Meals plus 1 Lean & Green Meal) should be followed to maximize plan effectiveness and ensure that you get all the nutrition your body requires.
Is the lean serving size determined before or after the food is cooked?
After—the lean serving size is the ‘cooked weight’ of the protein.
What type of salad dressing should I use?
If you choose to include a salad as part of your Lean & Green meal, choose salad dressings that contain no more than 5 grams of fat and less than 6 grams of carbohydrate per serving. Don’t forget to add any salad dressing you use to your overall carbohydrate.
Does the Medifast plan allow all types of vegetables?
During the weight loss phase of your plan, it is recommended that you avoid higher carbohydrate vegetables like carrots, corn, potatoes, peas and Brussels sprouts. Once you transition to the maintenance phase of the program, you are encouraged to include a variety of vegetables for long-term health.
What types of snacks are permitted?
You can choose from a variety of healthy, delicious snacks on the Medifast plan. Snacks should be limited to one per day and should not be substituted for a Medifast Meal or your Lean & Green Meal.
Here’s a menu of snacks you can choose from:
- Medifast apple cinnamon, ranch, or white cheddar Soy Crisps
- Medifast multi-grain or garden vegetable flavor crackers
- Celery stalks (serving size: 3)
- Sugar-free gelatin (serving size: 1/2 cup)
- Sugar-free Popsicle® (serving size: 1)
- Dill pickle spears (serving size: 2)
- Sugar-free gum or mints (serving size: up to 3 pieces)
How is Medifast Plus for Diabetics different than regular Medifast meals?
Medifast Plus for Diabetics contains fewer than 6 grams of sugar and 9 total carbohydrates per serving and has been specially formulated to meet the needs of people with diabetes. Medifast Plus for Diabetics can be used as a supplement in a weight-loss program or in addition to a diabetes meal plan. Medifast Plus For Diabetics has been certified by the Glycemic Research Institute to make the claim “low glycemic” and is authorized to use the Glycemic Research Institute’s Seal of Approval.
