

was launched to encourage pre-teen and teenage girls to widen their personal definition of beauty and build self-esteem through creative self-expression. Girls 11 to 17 were challenged to create a picture of real beauty by submitting an original photograph of a beautiful female in their lives - mother, sister, grandmother, teacher or a friend - whom they believed embodies real beauty, accompanied with a 100-word essay explaining why.
An independent panel of judges reviewed almost a thousand entries. The contest judges were made up of experts on women and beauty; including Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., a psychologist and faculty member of Harvard Medical School, and Naomi Wolf, author of the best-selling "The Beauty Myth".

Katy Trotter won the grand prize for her essay about her mother and her mother's co-worker Kris. The pair have worked for the past 28 years at a business which employs people with developmental disabilities. As Katy's poignant piece states, "Real beauty is accepting and loving yourself and your friends, because the truth is, every person is a perfectly 'imperfect' being."
Katy's efforts earned her a grand prize of $20,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds towards her education, a trip to New York City and a selection of Dove products. Nine additional finalists were awarded $2,500 each in U.S. Savings Bonds towards their education, plus a Dove gift basket.
